The symptoms for heart failure, heart attacks and deep vein thrombosis are similar, but the treatment required for each condition varies. The onset of the aforementioned conditions can be fast and deadly in cases. The most important thing is to figure out what the patient’s discomfort really means and which condition they are experiencing in an accurate, timely manner. Purpose of troponin testing:

Troponin (Tn) is part of the contractile machinery of muscle cells and is composed of three subunits, referred to as I, T, and C. Troponin C are found in both skeletal muscles and cardiac muscles. Troponin I and Troponin T have different isotypes in cardiac and skeletal muscles which can be distinguished by an immunoassay. The current cardiac troponin assays target the unique sequences within troponin I (TnI) or troponin T (TnT). Troponin testing is one of the tests in a panel of what doctors refer to as “cardiac enzymes.”

The main use of measuring troponin levels is to diagnose myocardial infarctions (MI), commonly known as a “heart attack”. When this occurs, the cardiac muscles experience a period of oxygen deprivation due to obstructed arteries. This loss of oxygen causes damage or death of cardiac cells which in-turn causes troponin to leak out into the bloodstream. Measuring the biomarker of troponin effectively distinguishes patients who are experiencing a heart attack compared to other conditions which may have similar symptoms such as heart failure.

Issue with Conventional Troponin Testing:

Conventional troponin is primarily used as a binary test. When the troponin levels are high, the diagnosis is straight forward, When the troponin levels are below the cut-off for MI, serial testing is required for a period of over 6-12 hours in order to ensure that myocardial injury is detected with adequate sensitivity. The effects of this can delay the time heart attack patients receive treatment.


Zepto’s Solution:

Zepto’s high sensitivity Troponin assay can reduce the time to diagnosis of a patient with a suspected MI. Zepto’s hs-troponin assays can detect clinically significant elevations and changes in troponin concentrations much sooner in the evaluation due to the low limit of detection of the assay. The accuracy of the diagnosis of myocardial infarction is further increased by analyzing the pattern of change in the hs-troponin measurement rather than by using a binary cut-off. The low levels that are used for measuring changes in cardiac troponin levels allow the clinicians to make the diagnosis much more quickly, possibly in as little as 1-3 hours. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner treatment can begin, improving patient outcome.
